GBPJPY Pip Value Calculator
ForexKnowing what one pip of GBPJPY is actually worth, before you size a trade, is what this calculator answers — using GBPJPY's own real contract size and point value rather than a flat forex assumption.
How do I calculate pip value for GBPJPY?
At GBPJPY's stored contract size (100,000 units per lot), here's what one pip of movement is worth at three common lot sizes.
Say a trader opens 0.50 lots of GBPJPY, with a stop loss 84 pips away and a take profit 168 pips away.
Why does pip value change between instruments?
Pip value depends on the pair's quote currency and the current exchange rate, not just the pip size. GBPJPY is worth $6.37 per pip per lot right now — a different pair, or the same pair at a different exchange rate, would give a different dollar figure even with an identical pip count.
Why is pip calculation different for non-standard-decimal instruments like this one?
Most forex majors use a 4-decimal pip convention, but plenty of instruments don't: JPY pairs use 2 decimals, and GBPJPY uses its own quoting convention (one pip here equals a raw price move of 0.01). This calculator uses GBPJPY's own real pip/point size rather than assuming the generic 4-decimal convention, which would silently miscount the move.
What one pip means on GBPJPY
Daily ranges of 100 pips or more are normal here, so a lot size that feels comfortable on EUR/USD can swing the account far more on this pair.
On this site one pip for GBPJPY is 0.01 in price. If GBPJPY rose from 207.24 to 207.84, the move is 0.60 ÷ 0.01 = 60 pips.
How the value per pip is calculated
For one lot: 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 JPY per pip for 1 lot; assuming USDJPY = 157.00 (1 JPY = 1 ÷ 157.00 = $0.006369), that is $6.37. Everything below uses $6.37 per pip for 1.00 lot.
GBPJPY value per pip at common lot sizes
- 1.00 lot: 1.00 × $6.37 = $6.37 per pip.
- 0.10 lots: 0.10 × $6.37 = $0.637 per pip.
- 0.01 lots: 0.01 × $6.37 = $0.0637 per pip.
- 5.00 lots: 5.00 × $6.37 = $31.85 per pip.
Value per pip grows in direct proportion to lot size, so doubling the lots doubles both the gain and the loss for every pip price moves.
Worked example: what a stop costs on 0.30 lots of GBPJPY
- Entry 207.24, stop 206.64: the distance is 60 pips.
- Value per pip on 0.30 lots: 0.30 × $6.37 = $1.91.
- Money at risk if the stop is hit: 60 × 0.30 × $6.37 = $114.66.
- Spread of 5 pips (an invented figure for this example): 5 × 0.30 × $6.37 = $9.56, which is 8.3% of the stop distance.
Spreads are wider than on EUR/USD, and the pip is worth yen converted to dollars. On a 60 pip stop the spread above takes 8.3% of the room before price moves at all, and on a stop half as wide, 30 pips, it would take 16.7%.
Risk at other stop distances on 0.10 lots
- 30 pips: 30 × 0.10 × $6.37 = $19.11.
- 60 pips: 60 × 0.10 × $6.37 = $38.22.
- 120 pips: 120 × 0.10 × $6.37 = $76.44.
- 240 pips: 240 × 0.10 × $6.37 = $152.88.
Each doubling of the stop doubles the money at risk on the same lot size, which is why a wider stop needs a smaller position to keep the risk the same.
Working backwards: how far can the stop be?
Sometimes the lot size is fixed and the question is how wide the stop may be. Say you hold 0.10 lots of GBPJPY and will risk $100.
- Value per pip on 0.10 lots: 0.10 × $6.37 = $0.637.
- Stop distance: $100 ÷ $0.637 = 157.0, rounded down to 156 pips.
- Check: 156 × 0.10 × $6.37 = $99.37, inside the $100 budget.
- In price terms, 156 × 0.01 = 1.56, so a buy at 207.24 would have its stop at 205.68.
If that stop is too tight for how GBPJPY actually moves, the answer is fewer lots, not a stop that sits inside the normal noise. The GBPJPY lot size calculator does that step for you.
Does the value per pip change?
Yes, because GBPJPY is quoted in JPY. The value per pip is converted to US dollars at the going rate, so it moves with that rate. Suppose JPY loses 5% against the dollar: one JPY falls from $0.006369 to $0.006369 × 0.95 = $0.006051, and the value per pip for 1 lot becomes 1,000 × $0.006051 = $6.05 instead of $6.37. Re-check the value when the rate has moved a lot, especially before sizing a long-held position.
Verify the GBPJPY pip value with your broker
The contract size of 100,000 and the pip size of 0.01 are reference values. Brokers can define a point or pip differently and quote an extra decimal, so compare $6.37 per pip with the tick value in your platform's contract specification. For background on the instrument, see the pound sterling on Wikipedia.
Where to find the GBPJPY value in your platform
- Open the contract specification for GBPJPY (in MetaTrader, right-click the symbol in Market Watch and choose Specification).
- Check the contract size: this page assumes 100,000.
- Check the tick size and tick value, then scale to one pip of 0.01 if they differ.
- Compare the result with $6.37 per pip per lot; a gap of more than a few percent usually means a different contract size or a different conversion rate.

Conclusion
This only holds if 100,000 units per lot is actually your own broker's real contract size for GBPJPY — it's a figure that varies by broker, especially outside plain forex majors. Always confirm your own platform's GBPJPY specification (Market Watch, then Specification) before trusting a pip/point value for a real trade. See the difference between points and pips, Wikipedia's entry on percentage in point (pip) for the underlying concept, and real MT4 screenshots comparing pip value across different lot sizes.
Contract specification
Point value and minimum lot step vary by broker on index/CFD instruments — a mismatch here is a common, avoidable cause of an unexpectedly large loss. Confirm this instrument's contract specification in your platform before sizing a real trade.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pipette?
A pipette (fractional pip) is one-tenth of a pip — the fifth decimal place for most forex pairs, or the third decimal for JPY pairs.
How much is one pip worth on GBPJPY?
For 1.00 lot with a contract size of 100,000, one pip is worth $6.37. For 0.10 lots it is $0.637 and for 0.01 lots $0.0637.
How many pips is a move of 0.60 on GBPJPY?
Divide the price move by the pip size: 0.60 ÷ 0.01 = 60 pips. On 1.00 lot that move is worth 60 × $6.37 = $382.20.
Does the GBPJPY pip value change with the price?
It changes with the JPY exchange rate, not with the GBPJPY price itself. A 5% fall in JPY against the dollar would cut the value from $6.37 to $6.05 per lot.
Does leverage change the value per pip on GBPJPY?
No. Value per pip depends on lots, contract size and the conversion rate. Leverage only changes the margin needed to hold the position, and the position size should come from your risk and stop distance.
