AUDJPY Profit & Loss Calculator
ForexWorking out the exact profit or loss on a AUDJPY trade from its entry and exit price — not just an estimate — is what this calculator does, using AUDJPY's own real point value rather than a generic pip assumption.
How do I calculate profit or loss on a AUDJPY trade?
Say a trader opens 1.00 lot of AUDJPY short (sell) at 110.51, with a stop loss at 110.95 and a take profit at 109.63.
Same trade, followed from entry to either real outcome — not an isolated number.
What information do I need for an accurate profit/loss calculation?
Entry and exit price, the instrument traded, and position size in lots are the core inputs — this calculator also uses AUDJPY's own stored contract size and point value so the dollar figure is correct for this specific instrument, not a generic forex assumption. For a precise real-world figure, spread, commission, and any overnight swap would also need factoring in.
How profit and loss is calculated on AUDJPY
Global risk sentiment, Chinese data, and Reserve Bank of Australia and Bank of Japan policy drive it. Spreads are moderate, and pips are worth yen converted to dollars.
Worked example: a AUDJPY buy from entry to outcome
Assume a $10,000 account risking 1% and buying 0.44 lots of AUDJPY, the size from the lot size example. The prices are rounded and invented for illustration.
- Entry 109.90, stop 109.55 (35 pips away), target 110.60 (70 pips away, twice the stop).
- Value per pip for 1.00 lot: $6.37; 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 JPY per pip for 1 lot; assuming USDJPY = 157.00 (1 JPY = 1 ÷ 157.00 = $0.006369), that is $6.37.
- If the stop is hit: 0.44 × 35 × $6.37 = -$98.10, which is 0.98% of the account.
- If the target is hit: 0.44 × 70 × $6.37 = $196.20, which is 1.96% of the account.
A sell trade mirrors this. You would sell at 109.90, place the stop at 110.25 and the target at 109.20, and the same $98.10 loss and $196.20 gain apply, because the stop and target distances are unchanged.
A trade that closes between stop and target
Most trades end at neither level. Suppose the AUDJPY buy from the example is closed by hand at 110.18, 28 pips above entry.
Closing early locked in 0.8R instead of the planned 2R. That is a valid choice, but it lowers the average win, so check it against your win rate before making it a habit.
Spread: the cost the gross result hides
- Spread: 3 pips (an invented figure for this example), costing 0.44 × 3 × $6.37 = $8.41.
- Net if the target is hit: $196.20 − $8.41 = $187.79.
- Net if the stop is hit: $98.10 + $8.41 = $106.51 lost.
The spread widens the loss and shrinks the win, so your real reward-to-risk is slightly below the 1:2 you drew on the chart. The AUDJPY risk reward ratio calculator shows that effect directly.
Scaling the same trade up and down
Position size is the one input you fully control. Keep the same entry, the same 35 pip stop and the same 70 pip target, and only change the lots:
- 0.44 lots: stop -$98.10 (0.98% of the account), target $196.20 (1.96%).
- 0.88 lots: stop -$196.20 (1.96% of the account), target $392.39 (3.92%).
- 2.20 lots: stop -$490.49 (4.9% of the account), target $980.98 (9.81%).
The ratio between stop and target never changes, but five stops in a row at the largest size would take the account from $10,000.00 to $7,547.55, while the 1% version loses far less over the same run. Size decides how long you can survive a bad stretch on AUDJPY.
Losing streaks and the recovery they need
Five consecutive 1% losses on AUDJPY take the equity, step by step, from $10,000.00 to $9,900.00 → $9,801.00 → $9,702.99 → $9,605.96 → $9,509.90. That is a 4.9% drawdown, and getting back to $10,000 needs a gain of $10,000 ÷ $9,509.90 − 1 = 5.15%, slightly more than the loss itself. If each win pays 2% (a 1:2 trade risking 1%), it takes 3 wins in a row from $9,509.90 to pass $10,000, which is why cutting size after a losing run helps.
Holding overnight
Trades held through the daily rollover can carry a swap fee or credit, set by your broker and depending on direction and the interest-rate gap between the two currencies, and it is not in the numbers above. For a longer hold, check the swap or financing figure in your platform before you plan the result. See swaps in finance for the general idea.
Verify the AUDJPY result with your broker
The $6.37 per pip comes from a contract size of 100,000 and a reference conversion rate. Your broker's contract specification decides the real tick value, and your account statement shows the true profit and loss including spread, commission and swap. For how quotes are built, see the bid–ask spread on Wikipedia.

Conclusion
This only holds if 100,000 units per lot and $6.35 per pip are your actual broker's real numbers for AUDJPY. If you edit this calculator's Contract Size field to match your own broker, the Point Value field recalculates automatically — but you can also type your own exact point value directly if you already know it. Always confirm your own platform's AUDJPY specification before trusting a result for a real trade. See how profit per pip is worked out, and Wikipedia's entry on contracts for difference for the underlying contract mechanics.
Contract specification
Point value and minimum lot step vary by broker on index/CFD instruments — a mismatch here is a common, avoidable cause of an unexpectedly large loss. Confirm this instrument's contract specification in your platform before sizing a real trade.
Frequently asked questions
Why might my real result differ slightly from this calculator?
Spread, commission, and swap/overnight fees are not included in the core profit/loss figure, which shows the raw price-movement result.
Does profit/loss depend on trade direction?
The dollar amount for a given price distance is the same either way — what differs is which direction of movement produces a profit versus a loss.
How do I calculate profit and loss on AUDJPY?
Multiply lots × the number of pips price moved × the value per pip. With 0.44 lots and a 70 pip gain at $6.37 per pip, the profit is 0.44 × 70 × $6.37 = $196.20, before spread and swap.
How much does the spread cost on a AUDJPY trade?
Spread cost = lots × spread in pips × value per pip. A spread of 3 pips on 0.44 lots costs 0.44 × 3 × $6.37 = $8.41. Use your broker's real spread, which changes through the day.
Does leverage increase my profit per lot on AUDJPY?
No. Profit per lot is set by the price move and the value per pip, $6.37 here, whatever leverage you use. Leverage changes only the margin the position needs, so a higher ceiling lets you open a larger position but does not make a given position earn more.
How do I calculate a sell trade on AUDJPY?
Use the same formula with the direction reversed: you profit when price falls. Selling at 109.90 and closing at 109.20 is a 70 pip gain, worth $196.20 on 0.44 lots.
